Edith in progress

It's a long time since I've done any faces.

You know Johannes Vermeers painting, The girl with the pearl earring. That's what I've used as inspiration for my painting. And, when I had done her eyes yesterday, I thought she looked like Edith in the series, Downton Abby. Can you see it?

I'm pleased on how she is turning out, the only thing that might be a problem is her nose. I'll just have to work on it. I'm using watercolor pencils for this one, and I'm very happy for having control of the painting process. Watercolors are much harder to control, and I always feel acrylics won't cooperate as well with me.

I'm not sure I will do more about her, I don't need a copy of Vermeers painting. I might do another one and change her a bit. I'm planning on doing a piece with a girl and some birds.

Coming weekend I'll probably spend time on my computer, trying to figure out how to use photoshop. I've been talking of that programme for so long, that handyman bought it for me yesterday. Now I'll have to do the tedious job of learning how to. Wish me luck.

  1. She is beautiful, and there is a resemblance to Edith! If you like, you could link to the challenge at Art Journal Journal, inspired by the masters - would love to see you there! Valerie

  2. Noses are so tricky. I am sure you will work through the problems. With noses it always seems to be the shadow that causes the problem, keep at it she has beautiful eyes. x

  9. Beautiful, Laila! She does look like Edith, for sure. You can find some free online training for PhotoShop that is quite good - and lots of people blog about using it as well. Take care, my friend.xx

  11. Laila, what a masterpiece! Your girl is gorgeous. I have Photoshop Elements and find it simple and wonderful to use. However, I liked the older version much better and was able to navigate it better. Photoshop is so much more than the Elements that I don't think I'd be able to learn that. Good luck and just have fun experimenting with PS.

  13. Yes, I do see a bit of Edith in her! Your painting is looking great. As for Photoshop, good luck. I've tried so many times and I guess I'm just a dummy because I can't seem to do anything with it.

  17. Oh yes, I do think that she looks like Edith. Isn't it funny that when you start a drawing you never know how it will look until it's finished. Great drawing - I love it!

Good luck with PS! Elements is enough for me, normally I use free programs because they are simple and quick to work with...

  19. This is a VERY impressive study of Vermeer's work. She does remind me of Edith's character in Downton Abby, especially around the nose that you believe is giving you so much trouble. Good luck with Photoshop and Blessings!

  24. I am impressed about your take on Vermeer's painting - wow! Yes, she reminds me of Edith as well. Good luck with learning how to use Photoshop - I love it, but now I'm learning how to use Lightroom and I love that even more than Photoshop. I need both programs though for what I'm doing with my photos.
